Liverpool vs Southampton

We have been saying for some time now that top 4 is still possible but the team seems unable to see out games from a winning position and keeps on throwing away points. It goes without saying that we need to change that and win most if not all of our remaining games starting with Southampton.

Chelsea have a difficult run in on paper but have discovered a new resilience which means they won’t drop many points and I don’t think we will catch them. But, whisper it quietly, if we win our two games in hand over Leicester we will be just three points behind them and they are showing signs of wobbling losing at home 2-4 to Newcastle last night. The big if is IF we can win those games with a team that has struggled to overcome the loss of key players and seemingly lacking in confidence in those moments when calm heads are needed to see out tense situations and tight games. A good win against Southampton will lift spirits again and if at the same time we can do something about our goal difference that will do no harm either. We currently have a 4 goal deficit to Leicester and if we can put a good run together it might well come down to those fine margins in the final reckoning.

We have an opportunity against a weakened Southampton side missing several players including Ings, Minimino, Romeu, Obafemi, Bertrand and the unfortunately named Smallbone. They don’t have much to play for now as they are two places above the relegation zone with a comfortable 10 point cushion over the teams below them. The Liverpool squad has had a decent rest and a good win later today will close the gap on Leicester, improve our goal difference and see us going into the United game with more confidence and a clear target. If we could get a win against a United side, which has other fish to fry and cement our challenge for fourth place over the other contenders, it would put some real pressure on Leicester and bottler Brendan (joking;-) )

Team: Alisson, TAA, Phillips, Kayak, Robbo, Fab, Jota, Thiago, Mane, Firmino, Salah. Let’s just go for it and help Salah beat ‘arry and his shirt to the golden boot.
