Like most local Liverpool fans I know, I can’t say I care for international football, but I do enjoy seeing England get beat in any major tournament that I’ve been reliably informed by the media they’re nailed on to win.
The following is to explain why I’ll be supporting Scotland this Friday, why I believe more than a few Liverpool fans will be doing so to and hopefully encourage a few of the ‘not arsed I’ll wait for the proper football to start thanks’ to maybe get involved.
My reason is pretty much Kenny Dalglish, the greatest ever in my eyes, my Dad’s hero and subsequently, as an impressionable youngster, inherited as mine but fair play to Dave (my dad) he wasn’t wrong.
As you get older and the Red passion grips you, you start to work backwards to educate yourself and find little gems to casually drop into conversation with mates in school, work or just in the pub and the one thing that really starts to stand out is Scotland.
For example you find out in 1892 Honest John Houlding sent John McKenna off to Scotland to “find a team worthy of playing league football for Liverpool”, or you read about our first Scottish superstar, Alex Raisbeck, the captain of our first title winning side in 1900-1901.
Or about proud pre-war captain Matt Busby who’s career sadly went downhill after leaving Anfield, or our second Scottish superstar, Billy Liddell a player of such extraordinary talent the team were known as Liddellpool when he played.
Or the greatest Briton ever, Bill Shankly, by far the most important figure in the history of our club. Onto superstars Ian St John and Ron Yeats FA cup winners in 1965 when the cup meant everything, as weird as that sounds now.
Kenny, Alan Hansen and Graeme Souness, superstars, league titles, European cups and providers of more glorious moments and memories than most club’s will have in their entire histories.
Stevie Nicol who managed to stand out in the amazing 1987-1988 league winning side then sadly went into punditry, or Gary MacAllister, treble winner, UEFA cup golden goal history maker and late derby winner extraordinaire.
And then there’s our modern day legend, just the European cup and League title, so far, Scotland’s captain Andy Robertson.
So on Friday, sit back, raise a glass and if only for one night proudly say, we’re not English we are Scots.

Here we are then. It’s crunch day.
The day that divides the 4KK community but not in a disrespectful way as we all understand the others’ passion for their countries and allegiances. So let the battle commence and we down south must not fear the raising of the kilts, the war cry of the dreaded bagpipes and the passion of Andy “duracell” Robertson and his soldiers.
Those north of the border and their Celtic allies must not fear young snots like Phil “little smartarse” Foden or Harry “deflection” Kane or the nous (snigger) of Gazzer “no waistcoat” Southgate. The undeniable fight and passion of the Scots must be countered by the overpaid skills of the entitled English. Oh, and we may have “Donkey” Maguire returning although I would rather he had another day on Red’s swing.
If Scotland loses, then is that the end of their hopes of progression as Croatia are no pushover or if England lose will that then blow the table wide open? In case anyone is interested there are two other games as well Croatia v the Czechs which may or may not affect either of our teams so a beady eye needs to be kept on that result. Lastly the “Dyche like” Swedes take on the Slovaks who pulled one out of the bag by defeating the Poles but can they get past the wall of Viking giants that breed so well in the land of the midnight sun. One to use for a sleep inducing afternoon nap on the sofa before the later excitement to come.
Whatever the outcome of the Biggest International Great Game of the Year, or the “Biggy” as we will call it, we will all remain friends its just some of us will have the bragging rights at the end of the night.
Take your sides and let the battle commence.
