I recently read that Billy Beveridge Liddell would have been 100 this year and that there was a book out to celebrate his career as a Liverpool great. The book is called Liddell at One hundred and was written by Peter Jones. It will surprise many of you to hear though that I am not old enough to have actually seen him play so, if you want further details of him playing, you would need to speak to Greg or Mike 😁

Anyone who has looked even briefly into the history of Liverpool FC though will know that he is one of the stand out players from the past along with Elisha Scott who is mentioned below. I will not attempt to cover an entire career or life here because I wouldn’t be able to do him justice but the following is just the bare bones of what was a long and distinguished career.

He signed with the club as a teenager in 1938 and retired in 1961, having scored 228 goals in 534 appearances (interrupted by WWII) (placing Liddell fourth and 12th in the respective club rankings as of August 2010). He was Liverpool’s leading goal scorer in the league in eight out of nine seasons from 1949–50 to 1957–58, and surpassed Elisha Scott‘s club record for most league appearances in 1957. This record was later surpassed by another true Liverpool great, Ian Callaghan with 857 appearances.

I would urge anyone with an interest in the rich history of this great club to to take a look at his life and career. There is plenty of good material on the net including of course the book, the official LFC club site, and our old favourite, Wiki. I would urge you have a look at one of these to get an understanding of a great player and a good man. In fact the only criticism of him I can find anywhere is that he was Scottish…..
