Sheikh it up?
AN ARTICLE BY MATTY
Short question from me for everyone. Interested to see the answers.
Let’s just imagine that FSG sold Liverpool FC tomorrow to Dubai. Liverpool FC essentially gain ownership that could compete with City financially, at the expense of some of its values. Would you support this? What would your reasoning be for supporting it? How would you justify it somehow meaning more and being not as bad as City if we became an oil money club? After all, money means trophies. Money means the best squad possible. Money means wins.
Or for that matter, an oligarch or a Middle Eastern sheikh decide to buy the team? How would it be different from Chelsea or Newcastle? Again, how could you justify it in such a way where Liverpool aren’t the bad guys if they gave in and sought oil money to keep up with the big boys?
Perhaps most importantly, if such a sale were to occur, how would you feel? Would you feel betrayed that the club’s values were trampled on by the lust for money? Would you be elated that FSG’s cheapness would finally be gone from the club? Would it be a mix of both feelings? Would you give up supporting the club if they did such a thing?
