Chelsea v Liverpool FA Cup Final
I only go back as far as 1965 in my memory of FA Cup finals, but it’s not a bad place to start. That is my first recollection of both Liverpool and the FA Cup and the date when I claim Liverpool became “my” team. This was also the first time Liverpool won the FA cup something which was a source of great pride to Bill Shankly and the start of the inexorable rise of LFC. The score was 2-1 with Hunt and St John the scorers for Liverpool
<The next time out in the FA Cup final for Liverpool was 1971 when the score was 0-0 in normal time. After extra time the final score was again 2-1 after extra time. Unfortunately, this time Arsenal beat Liverpool and broke my heart at the time. Steve Heighway scored first for Liverpool which Arsenal equalised and then “Champagne” Charlie George scored the winner with an absolute screamer..
<In 1974 Liverpool totally outclassed and beat Newcastle 3-0 with goals from Kevin Keegan (2) and Steve Heighway
<In 1977 Man United twisted the knife when they ran out winners with a deflected winner and yes, you’ve guessed it, the score was yet again 2-1. Jimmy Case scored a lovely goal though on the turn to level the score before their “lucky” winner.
<Fast forward now to 1986 and we have the first all Merseyside final where Liverpool won the day and this time the score was. 3-1 Rush (2) and Johnston were the scorers for Liverpool. Someone called Lineker scored first for Everton. I wonder whatever happened to him? He is the one on the left in the photo
<Next up is 1988 and another defeat that was very hard to take against the cloggers of Wimbledon who ran out 1-0 winners after that missed penalty by John Aldridge or Dave Beasant’s save depending on your viewpoint.
<1989 and the fitting Merseyside FA Cup final. Liverpool had both John Aldridge and Ian Rush and they scored the goals that beat Everton in injury time with Rush grabbing a brace.
<1992 v Sunderland, Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners with goals from Michael Thomas and Ian Rush.
<1996 and another reversal against Man Utd with Eric Cantona (no oddly enough that is in fact the correct spelling) scoring the only goal. Eric is known as a bit of a mystic with a love of odd quotes such as โWhen the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.โ
<2001 Arse 2-1 This was the Michael Owen final, when despite being hammered for most of the game Owen turned the game on its head and scored two quickfire goals. This was also the final where the most handballs in the penalty area were missed by a referee in the history of the game, ever….anywhere in the World.
<2006 West ‘aaam 3-3 Gerrard’s final this one. Cisse, and Gerrard (2) were the Liverpool scorers. Gerrard’s second you will recall was an absolute scorcher in injury time. Yep Captain fantastic did what he does and saved the day. Liverpool went on to win the penalty shoot out 3-1
<2012 Chelsea 2-1 A disappointing game all round really lit up only by Andy Carroll proving he was worth every penny of his exorbitant transfer fee by scoring a consolation goal. Oh those were the days…
<2022 Chelsea again and this time revenge for Liverpool 6-5 in a penalty shootout after a nil nil after extra time. Liverpool achieved the second leg of a possible cup treble and even a possible competition quadruple. Chelsea achieved a unique Cup treble of their own losing three FA Cup finals in a row. Win/win I think they call it ๐
