Emotions
AN ARTICLE BY CONOR
Emotion; A small word but a multitude of interpretations. What is emotion? without the dictionary explanation I would understand the word to encompass; love, anger, hate, passion, jealousy, sadness, happiness etc etc. As a Liverpool fan I’ve felt all these emotions over the past thirty odd years that I can remember as a Liverpool fan.
Love: For the team in general, for individual players such as Gerrard in 05 in Turkey, Aldridge as an Irish goalscorer, Fowler as God, Rushy as that lethal goalscorer and Kenny as the king. Love for Gérard
Houllier, such an intelligent and thoughtful soul, love for the history that Shanks and Paisley instilled in
this club. Love for Rafa and for our current talisman, Herr Klopp the man that ended 30 years of pain and also number 6. So many more that I can’t mention as this would be a book other than an article.
Anger: I don’t like to berate players as at the end of the day they are doing their job. Many a player has drove me mad at some point or another, whether its a misplaced pass, open goal or og. I do console myself with the fact that at the end of the day they are doing their best, it may not be good enough but they are doing their best. At the end of the day if someone gives 100% but are not good enough I won’t be angry, happy? yes but angry no.
Hate: I use this with caution, I honestly try not to hate, I feel its a very strong term. That said, I do reserve it for certain rare situations. 2018 cl final, Ramos, what he did was deliberate, calculated and intentional with his assault on mo. If that had not occurred would we have won? we’ll never know. G&H, those boys almost ruined us, not sure what else to say. David Duckenfield and his cronies, what they done was despicable, there is a special place in hell reserved for them.
Passion: This means more, our current owners coined the phrase but also tainted it. The passion comes from the fans, those lucky enough to travel the world supporting this team, those that travel to Liverpool to be a part of the atmosphere, those that watch in the pup of their local, out with mates or at home on tv with the family.
Jealousy : For 30 years I was jealous. Jealous Of Utd, of City of Arsenal of Chelsea of Blackburn and of Leicester ffs. Jealous of the players we were linked with but didn’t sign. But now others are jealous of ‘our’ team. Over the past 3 or 4 years other fans have been jealous of our intensity, success, and of course our manager. People are now jealous of what we have, we have not bought it, we have earned it.
Sadness: Gerard slip, Michael Thomas, Heysel, Hillsborough.
Happiness: Where to start. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Liverpool on about 12 or so occasions and I think attended 10 matches , each time I’ve done that I’ve been lucky enough to meet some brilliant people (and a couple of fine ladies). It’s a City that welcomes and one I’d happily be a resident. I’ve been lucky to enjoy many Irish players having a successful career with the reds which in turn brought a certain level of happiness in the Irish national team. Happiness in more recent times when we won the treble in 2001, Happiness when we won the CL in Turkey 2005, Happiness winning the CL in 2019, Happiness in 2020 winning the PL after 30 years in the wilderness and Alisson’s header to win the game against WBA That header in the 95th minute was the catalyst for this article. What Ali and Klopp have gone through this year losing family members in the public eye yet having to perform at the highest level has my highest respect and at full time when they embraced we all know what was felt between them. I can’t watch that goal without smiling from ear to ear.
