It’s been a foregone conclusion for a while now but today it became official – LFC Premier league champions and number 20 officially secured, further solidifying our position as England’s most successful club.
There’s a number of firsts in this title winning team as well. Slot is the first Dutch manager to win the Premier league, Virgil is the first Dutch captain to lift the trophy and Szoboszlai becomes the first Hungarian to pick up a PL winners medal. This has been a theme for us, with Salah the first Egyptian to win the PL and am I right in thinking Mane was the first player from Senegal to win it? Possibly Diaz the first Colombian as well? Can’t remember if Cuadrado won it in his time at Chelsea but I can’t think of any others who may have won it. Robbo and Endo are also part of a very small group of players to win it from their respective nations.
To the game itself then and Spurs really were the perfect opponent for us today. Even though they took the lead, I was never concerned that we wouldn’t manage at least a draw today but in the end, the game was a walk in the park. Spurs have got to be the most clueless, naive team in the league and they’re so easy to play against. Almost anyone else would’ve turned up to spoil the party today, parked the bus and tried to frustrate but Spurs just aren’t capable of that and it only took us four minutes to draw level and 8 minutes after that, Mac Allister hit a rocket with his left foot that almost burst the net and you just knew it was going to be our day.
Speaking of Mac Allister, his display was enough to earn him the highly coveted McMOTM award as he put in a fantastic display, both with and without the ball. Scored a great goal, passing excellent as always but also smashed into a couple excellent tackles, as he ran the show in the centre of the park. He’s the archetypal FSG signing in a lot of ways. Unbelievable value for money with the release clause he had, ready to come straight in and improve the team but should also improve as he enters his peak years. Fits perfectly with our ‘no assholes’ rule and should he have his head turned by a Real Madrid offer in the next year or two, we’ll likely treble our money in terms of what we paid for him. Fantastic player who I could watch all day.
Elsewhere, all our front three performed well and were rewarded with a goal each for their troubles, with Salah ending his mini drought and surely being nailed on for the golden boot this season, to add to his PL medal.
As for Slot, we can really only stand back and applaud. I doubt even the most optimistic Liverpool fan expected him to win the PL in his first season. History tells us that more often than not, it doesn’t fare well for the man who replaces an iconic manager at a football club and to my shame, I must admit that the cynical side of me wondered if Slot had been brought in as a reasonably cheap option to be the fall guy who would take the hit for the inevitable drop off we would suffer after Klopp’s exit. How wrong I was and I’m delighted to be so. He’s handled the situation superbly and managed the team perfectly, with subtle tweaks to the system preferred to any attempt to really stamp his own identity on things and that lack of ego on his part was exactly what was needed. He entered a dressing room full of superstars who had won the biggest trophies, while he himself had a fairly humble CV in comparison. It could easily have gone another way had he tried to change too much, where the big players start to question a manager who has achieved a fraction of the success they have in the game. He quickly got them onside though and it will never be an issue for him again, as a PL winning manager. Nobody can ever take this season away from him but with a huge summer ahead, he’ll truly start to be judged from next season, when he starts to build his own team.
Amazing scenes at the end and it was great to see the images of some of our legendary figures celebrating together – Alisson and Van Dijk, probably the two most important signings we’ve made in the PL era in terms of impact, sharing an emotional embrace at the end and then Robbo and Trent dancing side by side in front of the fans. I don’t think there’s been a more iconic pair of fullbacks in the PL than those two. They’ve been very much a double act in their time playing together and their contributions and importance to our success in the Klopp era and now under Slot, cannot be overstated. If this proves to be the last season we see them playing together, winning the title is a fitting end for them. Legends that will never be forgotten.
For the newer lads winning their first title, they’ve now written their own names into our history and no longer need to feel the burden of having to deliver for this historic club. They’ve won the trophy most coveted by our fans and will hopefully use it as a platform to secure more trophies in the coming season.
We’ve done it then. Premier league champions 2024/25 and this time we can celebrate properly with the fans. There will no doubt be iconic scenes at the trophy parade, our fans never let us down in that regard and it can only inspire our players to push for more.
We can relax now in the final month of the season. We’ve been comfortably the best team in the land this season and can now smugly bask in the glory of guards of honour from our rivals, starting with Chelsea next week.
Enjoy it lads. You’ve made history, soak it all in as these memories will last forever and are what it’s all about as a player and a fan. Walk on!
