Let’s talk about the 433 and let’s talk about what it will be…….
AN ARTICLE BY DIMI – BUT CUT AND PASTED BY STU
So Klopp the master of the gegenpressing arrives from BVB where he’s played a 4231 and uses a 433 at Liverpool for 6 seasons. Why? Would you chose to change a formation that you’d used so successfully? Simple. We didn’t have the players to do it that way. We didn’t have a Robert Lewandowski type player and to do it he needed to have young, fit players who could do it week in week out. We didn’t have that at the time. Instead he went with a false 9 using Bobby’s attributes and build a team around him with 2 very fast inverted wingers in Mane and Salah. It worked so well that there was no need for him to go back to a 4231 . This style coupled with our workmen like Midfield worked perfectly with us using our Fullbacks in attack.
But…….after using it so successfully are we going to move on from the 433 that we’ve used? People will argue why change something that isn’t broken. It’s not about fixing something that isn’t broken it’s all about our rivals getting stronger and being able to read our game plan. We scored 90 plus goals this last season, yes we did so why change it then when we are scoring so many goals.
For me, I think we are moving away from the 433 . It may not be happening maybe this season where we’ll use it as a transitioning season but we will eventually move from the way we’ve played.
Here are the reasons…..
- Forwards……We have been collecting forwards of late in the last 2 seasons to be precise. Until the arrival of Minamino in December 2019 we had Mo, Mane and Bobby with Origi being with us intermittently and used sparingly. (LEGEND) , so the so called itsy bity players by me in reference to their height. We’ve also used Ox at times on the right .
- Move onto Summer 2020 we buy a 5.10’ Jota who btw had 4/14 of our headed goals last season in the PL (Most in the PL by a player) would like to commend Mane with his 3 and Robbo with his contribution of 2. (PL)
- January 2022 Luis Diaz -5.10’’
- June 2022- Darwin Nunez 6.2’’
- Midfield….Evolution of the hard working MF to a more creative type. Gini, Milli and Hendo the backbone of a workmanlike MF to the newer more skilful players.
- Harvey Elliot predominantly a right forward being converted to a RM
- Arrival of Thiago Alcantara.
- Fabio Carvalho.
- I would like to add Jones to this too because he is very talented and is good on the ball and again someone who offers height with Hendo and Fabinho all standing above 6.0’’ probably a good idea for him to learn to play the no 6 role given that Hendo’s 32 and Fabs 28 and needing a younger no 6. Let’s not forget Thiago, Fabs and Naby when they arrived had to adapt to the 433 as they played in teams with a double 6 so they know how to play it.
- Jude Bellingham…Not yet our player but whispers are that he could be the next to arrive…6.1’’ and the making of the new Steven Gerrard in him.
- Defence. So with the arrival of our new RB. ( Get in ) the young flying Scot Ramsay it means even having the best squad of 2021/22 we were looking to improve on it. This is evolution. We go and get an 18 year old as an understudy to the bet RB in the world. Why? Because we just needed a RB. We tried Joey G who’s good at it but injury prone to play it. Neco wanting to leave and Millie just another year older. It was inevitable. I’m so excited about this young fella because as I have said I see young Stevie written all over him. Could he play MF too? Maybe.
- The biggest indicator for me is the use of the 424 last season. We looked absolutely amazing when we played it with Fabs and Thiago and sometimes even Hendo and Naby being played as double 6’s. We sometimes subbed 2 for 2 during games just to keep the MF up to speed.
- The use of 5 substitutions. Love you Klopp. He’s finally got what he wanted. The other guy who really wanted it Pep Fraudiola. They both know with this change the teams are going to benefit massively. Being able to give more players game time and being able to change tactics, formations , in game changes when and how they want with a squad of 20 players at a given match. So even with going into the new season with 23-25 player squads it will be a massive advantage for us over other teams. Chelsea probably have the next best squad.
It’s sometimes not about having the biggest squad but the better quality and fitter squad, that’s why I think we need a big squad because we have many injury prone players.
Initially we’ll stick with the 433 but we’ll definitely be playing the 424 and the 4231 I feel.
Very excited about the Klopp 2.0 project. It’s not about out with the old and in with the new but rather an Evolution and I am excited to watch the next chapter of our success.
