Lies, Tory lies and Statistics

Is it ok to tell a white lie in an emergency ? Is it ok to to tell people the great British industry is responding fantastically to the request to produce more respirators when the main manufacturer says it would take a year or more to make a noticeable difference and that is if you can even get the key components from abroad? Or ok to say that there is plenty of personal protective equipment on its way to the front line “as we speak” when days later medical staff are still having to treat patients with inadequate protection despite them also a craftily lowering the recommended standards?

Is it fair to say you are being led by the science when all the evidence is that you are dragged along reluctantly by the number of deaths and when the evidence from Italy weeks before showed exactly what would happen? Can you insist that the measures are being introduced only when they are needed but not before and then just a day or two later introduce all the measures you previously said were not yet needed? Is it fair to say that the corner will be turned in 12 weeks when that is merely a hope based on nothing more than wishful thinking? So you ask the most vulnerable to isolate for said 12 weeks too knowing full well it won’t be over by then.

In short, when are you acting in the best interests of the Country to reassure people and prevent panic and when are you just trying to cover your arse and make it seem that you are really doing all you could?

Why is it the supermarket shelves are emptying when we are the most caring society in the World if not the Universe and yet it isn’t happening in Italy?. Why do people continue to go to pubs and some stay open even when told to stop? Could we be fooling ourselves to think we care or ever did care or is it another legacy of the Thatcher years releasing that innate selfishness?. It certainly smacks of a lack of trust or belief in the powers that be but is that surprising when they repeatedly lie about even the little things?.

Boris now threatens to get tough if people don’t follow the instructions but who was wishy washy about telling people what to do and let it be known that most people would have only mild symptoms especially the young? Even now children going to school and those not going to school but going to play grounds will keep the virus spreading probably faster than we can cope with. But at least we are being led by the science…….

I know this article will be controversial but happy for people to disagree with some or all of it and to fight my corner whilst keeping it civil but probably with a bit of humour.
