Liverpool 0-1 Inter: Why the quadruple is so difficult
Having watched that game I don’t really want to focus too much on where we went wrong etc. In my opinion that game personified why winning the quadruple has never been done.
People may bemoan missed chances or a perceived defensive mistake or whatever but this literally was just one of those games. In most games we’d have scored at least one, if not two set piece goals in the first half with the two headers our CB’s had. We hit the woodwork three times, Salah hit both posts and Matip hit the bar with one of the aforementioned chances. Diaz also had one cleared by some miracle block from Vidal that defied physics by flying over the bar, instead of deflecting into the net.
As for their goal, as admirable a strike as it was, Martinez was in Virgil’s pocket all night, he was being bullied by him and the only reason he hit it when he did was because he wanted nothing to do with the big Dutchman. Now I’ll take nothing away from him, it was a brilliant finish but it was a one in ten converted worldie strike. They happen.
This game in itself however, encapsulates why the quadruple has never been done. Games like this happen, when the ball just won’t go in for you and your opponent pulls a rabbit out the hat. It ultimately didn’t matter tonight due to us doing the job in the first leg but a game like that in the FA cup and you’re out and even the league, there’s pretty much no margin for error now, three points behind this City team.
We’ve not been at our swashbuckling best the past couple of games, we could easily have lost to West Ham at the weekend with the chances they had but we’ve done everything mostly right. We’re talking fractions in us not scoring bucketloads of goals in the last two games so I’m not concerned. Our luck will turn again, we’re too good for it not to. As for tonight, the result is all that matters. Walk on!
