Liverpool 3-1 Bournemouth
Just a quick one troops as I only saw a small highlight package of the game.
Fairly chaotic start to the game defensively. Got away with an early mix up between Trent and Ali due to an offside, only for Bournemouth to pounce on a heavy touch by Trent and Virgil and Robbo to almost get in each other’s way when attempting to clear and we’re 1-0 down inside the first few minutes. I don’t know about the rest of you but it was a painful reminder of last season where we seemed to concede early almost every week for a fair chunk of the season. It’s been a long time since we’ve looked solid defensively, I’m sure we’re all hoping Endo can provide something of a defensive screen and shore us up a bit in that dept.
Thankfully we weren’t behind long, as Diaz equalised with a brilliant improvised finish to take his tally to two in two games. I’m expecting big things from him this season, after the disappointment of an injury plagued season last year.
It wasn’t long before we were ahead, Szoboszlai winning a penalty with a clever turn and Salah unconvincingly getting the job done in the end, scoring the rebound from his missed spot kick. Am I the only one that thinks Salah should be taken off spot kick duty? His recent record isn’t great and he’s never really been what I would describe as an accomplished penalty taker, the way Gerrard and then Milner were. Mac Allister on the other hand very much is and there’s no room for chasing personal goal scoring milestones with such an important role in the team. If there’s somebody better at it, the job should be there’s and Salah can stamp his feet all he wants in my opinion.
Speaking of Mac Allister, that was never a red card in a million years. You see that kind of challenge week in, week out and they’re pretty much never punished with a sending off. He was late and he did catch Christie but there was no venom or malice in the challenge at all and if there’s any sense left in the world of football officiating, that will he reduced to a yellow on appeal.
Good to see Jota open his account for the season after more good work from Szoboszlai and from the little I saw, Gakpo seemed more involved in his new found midfield role.
Job done then, the three points are all that really matters, although we remain very much a work in progress. I didn’t see enough of the game to pick McMOTM so I’ll let you lot decide that one.
The real acid test will be next weekend as we take on a very capable Newcastle side and it would be good to lay down an early season marker with a win over them. Walk on!
