Liverpool 3-3 Benfica
McMOTM
<Evening troops, just a quick filler to take us to music night.
Strange game last night, it was far from what you would describe as a tough game, yet we drew 3-3, although there are some caveats to that, principally the fact that back four had never played together. In most teams that might not be such a huge deal, ok they’ve never played together as a back four before but they’ve all played together in the same team. The big impact however, comes with how intrinsic our high line is. It has to be perfect and last night it wasn’t but that was also without Virgil – the chief organiser and orchestrator of our defence.
I thought Gomez had another steady game at RB and Kostas is a starter in 99% of teams. I really like the way Konate plays the game too, he’s going to be a real top player in a couple of years time.
Mixed display in midfield, I thought Keita was good, neat and tidy in possession. I’m not a massive fan of Hendo and Milner in the same midfield but they’re adequate at the very least.
Our options up front are simply sensational though. I thought Diaz was very impressive again, the more he settles and the other players get used to him, the more goals will come, you can just tell. Jota’s numbers are just ridiculous, an assist from him and and great to see Bobby back in goal scoring form with a brace. The fact we can take them off and bring on Mane and Salah is a daunting prospect for any opposition.
So while we may have snatched a draw from the jaws of victory last night, the reality is we made SEVEN changes for a CL quarter final and really should still have won comfortably. That’s real squad depth. Now I have no doubt that if we hadn’t had the two goal advantage from the first leg, Klopp wouldn’t have made so many changes but the fact he did and we can still perform at such a high level speaks volumes.
Fair play to Benfica, they’re a decent team who had a go. The lad Nunez up front looks top drawer and they’re generally quite a likeable team, who’s fans were a credit to them.
Another CL semi final of the Klopp era then and we’ll go into the tie as heavy favourites to progress to Klopp’s THIRD CL final and FOURTH European final in his reign. That really is incredible. What a manager. I’m so glad that Jurgen is a red…
No let up then, City again at the weekend in yet another semi final and after having an absolute war of attrition with Atletico last night and picking up a couple of injuries along the way, you’d fancy our well rested boys to take it right to them, high energy and intensity from the start and let’s see how much last night took out of them.
Anyway it truly is a golden era for Liverpool fans and I really hope we add at least one more trophy to the list this season. This manager and this team deserve the trophies to go with their brilliance. Walk on!
