Tonight we play the 2nd leg of the Champions League quarter final tie against Benfica. The clubs full name is in the title.

This tie is far from over so let’s not become complacent. We still have a job to do.

The Eagles where established in 1904, 28th February 1904.
They are the most supported club in Portugal and have never been relegated in their entire history.
They have won the European Cup twice, back to back Champions in 1960/61 and 61/62.
They where a formidable side back in the days when oil money, gangster money and other forms of buying a league/ cup where not on the radar.

Liverpool first played Benfica in 1978 in the European Cup, winning 2-1 away and 4-1 at the home of football.

We’ve met them a couple of times previously in the quarter finals of Europe’s premier Competition and won. We actually went on to lift the Trophy both times, but I’m not one that has a rabbit’s foot in my pocket.

When we defeated them 3-1 at Anfield in November 84 I was there. Myself and a mate decided to go to Portugal for the 2nd leg. We didn’t actually make it because we booked a 2 week holiday in Lloret De Mar for the summer. Some supporters we were, well I was only 19 at the time n thought about the totty I could pick up in Spain. I still to this day do not regret that decision.

It’s going to be a lively one at Anfield tonight. We should progress but we still have to remain focused. Football is a funny old game, Soop says that all the time and I believe him.🤷

European football is always a special occasion as it’s earned on merit from a strenuous league campaign the previous year.

Shanks would always say the league is our bread and butter. He wasn’t wrong, he was never wrong.

European football is the dessert earned.

Benfica is a club steeped in history, one of the great clubs that punched their weight back when football was more of a level playing field than it will ever be again. Ajax is another icon of days gone by where football rather than money mattered more.

Whatever happens tonight two European giants face off head to head.
It’s gonna be one hell of a game.
Lineup.
Ali, Trent, Konate, Big Virg, Robbo, Fabs, Thiago, Naby lad, Diaz, Firms, Salah.

I can’t believe I got through this article without swearing.
