Liverpool v Spurs
Well, we all hoped it would happen again this year and some of us put it in our predictions, but more in hope than expectation. I don’t think many of us truly believed that Arne could achieve so much in such short order. At the start of the season I was hoping we could qualify for the CL and possibly even win a cup, at best, but hats off to Arne and the team for a brilliant season, with the promise of more to come in future. I must admit when the season started and we were giving away so many chances playing out from the back, I was worried we might be in for a tough time. I do think the early fixtures helped settle the side but in the end just like every other team in the league, we still had had to play every team twice during the course of the season.
So much of the credit must go to Arne himself. He took on what most thought was an impossible task of following on from the legend that is Jurgen Klopp. He inherited a team of superstars with egos to match and yet he was a virtual unknown with a pretty sparse CV with which to stamp his authority on the team and yet he did just that in his own quiet way. The comparisons with Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley are hard to ignore.
Of course, there are those that are trying to diminish Arne’s and the team’s achievements this season but they are talking nonsense. They are just doing what all fans do to knock the other teams especially those more successful than their own team which, in Liverpool’s case, means every other team. In my opinion the league has actually been more competitive overall this year than it has for a good few years and whilst liverpool are a level above everyone else in terms of consistency, the number of teams still in with a shout for the CL places shows just how close the chasers are to each other. We have Newcastle, Villa, and Nottingham Forest all still in the mix along with the usual suspects Arsenal, City and Chelsea, with only United conspicuous by their absence. At this rate, next season we will have every team in the league fighting for the CL places. Well all of them, except of course Everton. As usual, they will content themselves with with achieving survival and regard success as getting a draw at home to Liverpool…..
