Ramblings from a middle aged Liverpool supporter.
THE SITE FOR LEGACY FANS EVERYWHERE
Well lads, it’s been a crazy 48 hours. It’s been a crazy 12 months really.
No fans in stadiums. Owners believing they are bigger than the supporters. Idiots.
Will they ever learn? Not a chance. They have no passion for OUR sport. Their only passion is the money. The money, money, money it’s all about the money, as someone once sang about.
Let me take you back a couple of generations.
I cannot for the life of me pinpoint my first introduction to football, I really can’t.
I’m only aware I’ve always been a Liverpool supporter.
Was I born with this in my genes? Possibly but I doubt my first utterance was We are Liverpool la la la la la. I probably had a little cry when I popped into this world. I know my mother did, she told me in later life. She said “What the hell is that?” Not kind but true.
As a child of 6 years old ( birthday is October ) my first real memory of football, that has stuck with me for 50 years was the 1971 FA cup final against the Arse.
My older sister put 6pence on Arsenal to win. I remember fuming at her for backing another team and not Liverpool. Seriously I can still feel the anger within me to this day n I was only 6 back then.
Life moved on. Liverpool FC was always centre stage in my thoughts and emotions. I’ve never known a day without my passion and love for my club. Jock hit the nail on the head yesterday with his post regarding his love for OUR club.
My mother would always buy me a Liverpool kit, not every year because they didn’t rip fans off back then by supplying kits every year.
My Grand dad was a major influence on my life, football and otherwise.
I was allowed to stay up late on a Saturday night to watch Match of the Day with him. He lived the other end of the street.
I’d walk in and say hi grandad. He’d sit me down in front of the telle ( Black n White lads, it was the 70’s)
I remember watching Liverpool verses Blackpool and asking which team is ours? No not like the owners of today that have no clue even in colour.
Anyway my grandad explained we were playing in the same tone whereas Blackpool were wearing the white shorts.
I’m sure I did his head in because I’d always be asking questions. He didn’t show it if indeed I was. I think he was proud his grandson was passionate about the club from such a young age.
This might go on a bit, sorry.
By the age of 9 nothing else mattered. We had a great team and a fantastic manager who was idolised by everyone.
We played Newcastle in the FA cup final in 1974 and we blew them out of the water. 3-0.
Within moments Shanks said he was retiring. I was in shock. I turned to my older brother who was 12 and asked what’s going on? Bob Paisley was to take over.
I actually remember asking my brother who is Bob Paisley.
( Don’t shoot me, I was only 9 )
A few years later I began going to the match.
78/79 I went to a few but in 79/80 I was a regular at the home of football.
I’d go with my mates, sometimes on my own if they couldn’t make it.
Stood on the Kop as a child with my Liverpool family around me was the perfect place to be. Anfield was my home.
I would sing my head off. It wasn’t long before I learned all the songs we sing.
The innocence of children and the passion for my beloved Liverpool drove me on through my childhood to adulthood.
Nothing to this day has changed.
I was at Hillsborough the year before the disaster for a midweek league cup game. It was the middle of winter and it was damn cold.
From going to Anfield in my later teens and 20’s I began travelling to away games. They were brilliant. Scousers on tour and all that. I’ve been all over the Country following our club.
I’ve never been to a away European game but I came close in 1984.
We were due to play Benfica in the European Cup. Me and a mate agreed to go, but……? we were walking through town and saw a bus advertising holidays. The company was called Zebra travel. We got on board to hear their spiel n signed up. We had two weeks in Lorette de Mar instead. Some fan, hey?
I could go on forever but I think I should not.
We all have our reasons and indeed introductions to the team we follow.
This simple fact in all our lives has brought this Community together, creating lifelong friendships and a bond between us all.
The love we share for Liverpool FC did that.
